Series 66 guide
Is the Series 66 hard?
Short answer: it's heavier on law, but very passablewith the right approach. Here's exactly what you're up against — and how to make it manageable.
What makes it challenging
The Series 66 (Uniform Combined State Law exam) is 100 scored questions over 150 minutes, and you need 73 of 100 correct (73%) to pass. It combines the Series 63 and Series 65 into laws, regulations, ethics, and economics — with law weighting making up about 45% of the exam. It also assumes the product knowledge from the Series 7, so the difficulty is the depth of legal and regulatory material, not trick questions.
The fastest way through it
- Practice more than you read. Doing questions and reviewing why each answer is right or wrong builds recall far faster than re-reading a manual.
- Prioritize the law. Regulations, ethics, and fiduciary duties are roughly 45% of the exam — concentrate your effort there.
- Space your review. Short, frequent sessions beat marathon cramming for long-term retention.
- Simulate test day. Full-length, timed mock exams tell you when you're actually ready.
