Series 24 · Guide
How long to study for the Series 24?
There's no published average to hand you here, so instead of guessing a number, size your prep against the exam's own structure — its length, its passing score, and which of its five job functions carries the most weight.
Build your timeline from the exam, not a guess
The Series 24 is 150 scored questions over 3 hours 45 minutes, and you need 70% to pass. It's built on top of rep-level knowledge you're assumed to already hold — the eligibility requirements are unsettled between FINRA's own outline and its exam page, so confirm your specific prerequisite directly with FINRA rather than assuming which prior registration qualifies. What the Series 24 adds on top of that base is supervisory judgment across five job functions, and one of them — Supervision of General Broker-Dealer Activities — is the largest by a clear margin.
A schedule built around the weighting, not the clock
- First: Get oriented across all five job functions so you know the shape of the exam — registration and personnel, general broker-dealer supervision, customer-related supervision, trading and market-making supervision, and investment banking and research supervision.
- Then: Weight your practice toward Supervision of General Broker-Dealer Activities, the largest single function, while still covering the three mid-sized functions in proportion to their share of the exam.
- Finally: Run full-length, timed mock exams that mirror the real function mix. Once you consistently clear 70%, that threshold — not an hour count — is what tells you you're ready.
Practice with fact patterns that ask what a principal must do— approve, reject, escalate, investigate, report, or document — not just whether an activity is compliant. That distinction is what Finance Exam Pro's Series 24 practice is built around.
