Is the Series 24 hard?

Short answer: it's long, and it asks a different question than the exams you've taken so far. Here's exactly what you're up against, and how to make it manageable.

What makes it challenging

The Series 24 (General Securities Principal exam) is 150 scored questions over 3 hours 45 minutes, and you need 70% to pass. The length is real, but the harder shift is conceptual: this isn't a heavier Series 7. On the Series 7, you were the person opening the account, making the recommendation, entering the trade. On the Series 24, you are not the one doing the act— you're the one who has to catch it, approve it, escalate it, or refuse it. Every one of the exam's five job functions is a supervisory-duty topic, not a product or mechanics topic, and it assumes you already have the rep-level knowledge underneath it.

Where the exam's weight actually sits

  • Supervision of General Broker-Dealer Activities is the largest function — WSPs, conflicts of interest, compensation, product due diligence, disciplinary actions, books and records, financial responsibility. Build your deepest prep here.
  • Three functions are close behind it — customer-related supervision, trading and market-making supervision, and investment banking and research supervision each make up a large share of the remainder.
  • Registration and personnel management is the smallest function — don't over-invest here relative to its size.
  • Practice with fact patterns, not recall. For every scenario, ask what a principal is required to do — approve, reject, escalate, investigate, report, or document — not just whether the underlying activity is compliant.

That's exactly how Finance Exam Pro is built — adaptive practice that resurfaces what you miss, every answer explained, and section-weighted mock exams.

Before you can sit for it — a real conflict, not a technicality

FINRA's own Series 24 outline and its live exam page list different prerequisite registrations for who's eligible to sit for the exam — the two sources don't match, and neither is clearly the stale one. This isn't something we, or any prep provider, can resolve for you. Confirm your eligibility directly with FINRA before you plan a testing timeline around a specific prerequisite registration.
