SIE guide

What is the SIE exam?

The Securities Industry Essentials exam is the entry point to a securities career — and the one exam almost everyone starts with.

The basics

The SIE is FINRA's entry-level exam covering the fundamentals of the securities industry. It's 75 scored questions with a 105-minute time limit. Its biggest draw: anyone 18 or older can take it with no firm sponsorship— so you can pass it before you're hired and stand out to employers. It's also a corequisite for the Series 6 and Series 7.

What's on it

The SIE spans four content areas:

Knowledge of Capital Markets16%
Understanding Products and Their Risks44%
Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts, and Prohibited Activities31%
Overview of the Regulatory Framework9%

Products and their risks is the most heavily weighted area — a smart place to focus.

Who should take it

Anyone exploring a career in financial services — students, career-changers, and new hires alike. Because it needs no sponsor, it's the ideal first step while you line up a role. From there, your path branches into the Series 6, 7, and state-law exams. See which license you need, or compare SIE vs Series 7.
