How to become a financial advisor

The exam you need depends on how you'll be paid— advice for a fee, or securities for commission. Here's how to choose and get licensed.

Two main routes

"Financial advisor" covers two regulated roles that decide which exam you take:

Route 1 — Fee-based adviser (investment adviser representative)

You give investment advice for a fee. Pass the Series 65 — no sponsor required, so this is the common independent path. If you'll also sell securities, the Series 66 (with the Series 7) covers both.

Route 2 — Commission-based broker (registered representative)

You sell securities for commissions. Pass the SIE, the Series 7, and a state exam (usually the Series 63). This route requires firm sponsorship.

Many advisors ultimately hold both sides. Still deciding? Compare the 63 vs 65 and the 65 vs 66, or read the full license guide.

Get licensed the smart way.
