Series 7 guide

Do you need a sponsor for the Series 7?

Yes — the Series 7 requires sponsorship by a FINRA member firm. But the SIE doesn't, and you can start preparing today.

What "sponsorship" actually means

To sit for the Series 7, a FINRA member firm must sponsor you — meaning the firm employs (or is hiring) you and files a Form U4 to register you and open your exam enrollment window. You cannot register for the Series 7 as an individual off the street. The SIE has the opposite rule.

The smart move: take the SIE first

Because the SIE needs no sponsor, most people pass it beforejob-hunting — it signals to employers that you're committed and lowers their risk in sponsoring you. Once you're hired and sponsored, you focus your window on the Series 7. Not sure which license fits your goal? See the full license guide.

No sponsor yet? Start anyway.

You can learn every concept and pass the SIE on your own timeline. When a firm opens your Series 7 window (typically 120 days), you'll already have the foundation — and Finance Exam Pro's adaptive practice targets exactly what you still need.
