How long to study for the Series 99?
There's no published average to hand you here, so instead of guessing a number, size your prep against the exam's own structure — its length, its passing score, and how the weight splits between operations and conduct.
Build your timeline from the exam, not a guess
The Series 99 is 50 scored questions over 1 hour 30 minutes, and you need 68% to pass — a slightly lower bar than the 70% most other FINRA representative exams require. It takes the SIE as a corequisite. Before you plan a study timeline at all, check whether you qualify for FINRA's waiver: it excuses people who already hold certain other qualifying registrations, held within the prior two years, from taking the Series 99 at all — confirm directly with FINRA. If you do need to sit for it, the exam splits 70% operations knowledge and 30% professional conduct, and that split should drive your plan.
A schedule built around the weighting, not the clock
- First: Work through the nine operations sub-topics — account opening, cashiering and transfers, custody of securities, trade reporting, margin, settlement, account statements, financial requirements, and books and records.
- Then: Cover professional conduct and ethics — customer and vendor relationships, privacy, escalating complaints and red flags, and supervision and control. It's only 30% of the exam, but across just four sub-topics it carries real depth per topic.
- Finally: Run full-length, timed mock exams. Once you consistently clear 68%, you're ready — that threshold matters more than any hour count you hit along the way.
