Series 6 guide

How long to study for the Series 6?

Most people need about 40–60 hours over a few weeks. Here's a realistic plan — and how to tell when you're actually ready.

A realistic range

The Series 6 is 50 scored questions over 90 minutes, and you need roughly 70%to pass. It's narrower than the Series 7 — the focus is mutual funds, variable annuities and variable life, and the suitability rules around them. Most candidates land in the 40–60 hourrange spread across a few weeks. If you just passed the SIE, you'll trend toward the lower end since the two exams overlap.

A sample 3-week schedule

  • Week 1: Work through lessons and easy practice on the core products — open- and closed-end funds, variable annuities, and variable life — to build a base.
  • Week 2: Shift to heavy practice. Concentrate on suitability, recommendations, and the regulatory rules that carry the most weight, and let adaptive practice resurface what you miss.
  • Week 3: Full-length, timed mock exams. Review every miss, drill remaining weak spots, and only sit for the real exam once your mock scores are consistently above 70%.

Practice more than you re-read, space your sessions, and build the plan around your exam date — that's exactly how Finance Exam Pro is designed to work.

Before you can sit for it

The Series 6 has the SIE as a corequisite and requires sponsorship by a FINRA member firm. Not sure this is the right license? Read our license guide or see how it compares in Series 6 vs Series 7. Want to gauge yourself first? Take a free Series 6 practice test.
