Series 65 guide
How hard is the Series 65?
It's broad rather than tricky — the challenge is covering economics, products, portfolio strategy, andlaw in one exam. Here's how to make it manageable.
What makes it challenging
The Series 65 (Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination) is 130 scored questions over 180 minutes, and you need 92 correct (about 71%) to pass. Unlike the state-law-focused Series 63, the 65 spans four content areas — economic factors, investment vehicle characteristics, client recommendations and strategies, and laws and ethics. The breadth (not trick questions) is what trips people up.
The four content areas (by weight)
- Laws, regulations & ethics — the largest section; fiduciary duty, registration, prohibited practices.
- Client recommendations & strategies — suitability, portfolio theory, retirement and tax basics.
- Investment vehicle characteristics — equities, debt, pooled products, derivatives, insurance.
- Economic factors & business information — the smallest section; indicators, monetary/fiscal policy, analysis.
The fastest way through it
- Practice more than you read. Working questions and reviewing why each choice is right or wrong builds recall faster than re-reading.
- Don't neglect the quant. Portfolio math and economics are easy points if you drill them; many law-focused studiers lose here.
- Use blueprint-weighted mocks. The 65 is heavily law-weighted — your practice should mirror that so your scores are meaningful.
That's how Finance Exam Pro is built: adaptive practice that resurfaces what you miss, every answer explained with the rule behind it, and mock exams weighted to the real Series 65 blueprint.
