How to become a stockbroker
The path runs through firm sponsorship and a few licensing exams. Here's exactly what to do — and which exams to pass.
The step-by-step path
- Pass the SIE first (optional but smart). The SIE needs no sponsor and signals commitment to employers.
- Get hired and sponsored. A FINRA member firm employs you and files a Form U4, opening your exam windows.
- Pass the Series 7. The Series 7 licenses you to sell most securities. (Why you need a sponsor.)
- Pass a state law exam. Usually the Series 63 — or the Series 66 if you'll also give advice for a fee.
- Register and start. Once your registrations are effective, you can transact business with clients.
Which securities license do you need?
Most brokers hold the SIE + Series 7 + Series 63. If your role is limited to mutual funds and variable products, a firm may register you with the Series 6 instead. Full breakdown in our securities license guide.
